What Is Purple Shampoo & How Does It Help Blond Hair?

Estimated Read Time: 4 ½ minutes

Summary: What is hair toner? It's purple shampoo for blonde hair! In this blog, learn what purple shampoo is and what it can do for blonde hair?

What Is Hair Toner?

Purple shampoo isn’t a new fad or trend that’s only just gracing our shelves. It’s just never found it’s popularity in mainstream media making it one of the beauty world’s best kept secrets for blonde, bleached and greying hair. But, we’re finally waking up… Did you know that in 2019, “What is hair toner?” was the most googled question related to beauty!?

Hair toner is usually a shampoo, conditioner or hair milk that contains violet/purple pigment which dispenses across the entirety of each hair strand helping neutralise the hair’s shade. For blonde, bleached and grey hair, this is hugely popular to use when addressing brassy tones that these colours can sometimes throw up.

What do we mean when we say “brassy’? Well, whether you’re naturally blonde, bleached, dyed your hair a lighter colour than normal, invested in highlights or tried out balayage, sometimes our platinum, ash or cool locks can turn reddish, buttery or even orange in tone! This can be particularly common in hair that’s been dyed lighter, as the previous colour will try to etch itself through.

What Does Purple Shampoo Do?

Gray and blonde hair tends to be more porous than other shades. This means it’s more susceptible to UV light, chemicals (like chlorine), minerals in the water you wash your hair with, and air pollution.

Thankfully, purple shampoo for blonde hair can work wonders and help keep these unwanted brassy tones at bay! Purple naturally neutralises yellow – it’s the basic rules of colour theory! – like how orange naturally neutralises blue and vice versa!

Look for a shampoo and conditioner that contain violet pigments which work as anti-yellowing agents, as well as antioxidants and a number of moisturising oils to deliver an effective cleanse, neutralise golden, brassy undertones, and provide your hair with essential hydration to allow you to show off your mane with confidence once again!

Cel Pro Tip: By using a purple shampoo you can also support your hair by going longer between salon appointments which can be magical for the health of your strands, as dyeing can take it’s toll on the condition of your locks.

Purple Shampoo For Blonde Hair: What Else Can You Do To Help Neutralise Brassy Tones?

As well as using a purple shampoo to wash your hair with, there are a few other things you can do to help keep those brassy tones at bay!

Use a shower head filter

To stop any mineral build up in and on your tresses (which can affect the shades of the strands), invest in a filter for your shower head, particularly if you live in a hard water area. It may seem an expensive thing to do upfront, but it will be worth it in the long run if you want to avoid discolouration!

Protect your hair from UV rays

Blonde, grey and/or white hair is at a higher risk of being damaged and discoloured by the sun’s UV rays. If you want to avoid this happening, it’s time to take its protection seriously when in the sun in order to keep it vibrant and fresh.

Invest in a hat and some UV protection spray for your hair. Also, remember that the sun is at it’s strongest between 10am-4pm, so spend the majority of your time in the shade during these hours, particularly in summer months or when on holiday.

Rock a swim cap

If you’re a keen swimmer, particularly in chlorine, this can lead to the discolouring of blonde hair. Try to wear a swim cap, and in addition, rinse the hair through with clean, non-chlorinated water before and after to stop the chlorine chemicals penetrating your mane and altering its shade.

Our Final Thoughts On Purple Shampoo For Blond Hair...

Purple shampoo is 100% the way forward when it come to preserving the look, vibrancy and freshness of your blonde/grey locks. It may have been sitting quiet on beauty store shelves for a while, but now it’s leaping into action and ready to bring your blonde strands back from the brink.

Remember though, always use a hydrating and sulphate-free purple shampoo, so you don’t dry out or damage the hair in another way!
