Early Signs of Balding in Men and Women

Estimated Read Time: 6 minutes

Summary: In this blog, we learn about the early signs of balding across the genders; why it happens and perhaps more importantly, how to help...

Once you hit adulthood, hair loss and thinning can begin at any time. That being said, the general consensus is that the older you are, the more likely you are to experience symptoms or hair thinning, loss, and balding.

Almost all cases of hair loss are down to your genetics… So, thank your bloodline! However, hair loss (or its technical name: androgenetic alopecia), thinning and balding symptoms can be spotted early in a variety of ways across all genders.

If you’re able to spot the first signs of hair thinning early, this means you can get in the know and start supporting your body in the right way to slow down symptoms. So, what early signs of balding, thinning, and hair loss should you be looking out for?

Early Signs of Balding in Men

Receding hairline:

One of the most well known early signs of balding, a receding hairline is when the hair starts to thin and retreat backward around the sides of the front of the head. The front hairline can make an M shape as the two sides recede at a faster rate than the middle of the scalp.

Top of the head:

This is a very gradual, early sign of balding and can take a few years before baldness becomes noticeable. This is the most common early sign of balding in men.

Temple/Crown:

This is when the hair starts to thin locally at the temples and the crown/vortex area at the back and top of the head.

First Signs Of Hair Thinning In Women

Widening parting:

If the parting of your hair seems to be getting broader appears to be wider apart, this can be a common sign of hair thinning in women.

Whole head thinning:

The most common early sign of hair thinning in women is the general thinness of hair across the entire scalp. The average person loses about 70 to 100 strands of hair every day, but this is usually not noticeable because it blends into the natural rhythm of the hair growth cycle.

You may notice more hairs than usual on your pillow in the morning, more hairs in your hairbrush or hair fall in the shower if you suspect you may be experiencing the first signs of hair thinning.

Thinning on top:

You may just notice localised thinning on the top of the head and no noticeable difference on the sides of the scalp. This can be an early sign of hair loss.

What should I do when I notice the first signs of hair thinning or balding?

Invest in the right products

Targeted shampooconditioner, and other specifically designed hair care products are essential for anyone experiencing the first signs of thinning and balding.

Here at Cel, our scientifically optimised Microstem range is specially formulated for those wanting to prevent and slow the symptoms of balding, thinning, or hair loss.

Support your hair from the inside out

The type of foods you eat can have an effect on your hair’s condition and its growth rate. Let’s face it, if you put the wrong kind of gas in your car it’s not going to function right and the exact same can be said for your body, skin, and hair.

If you’re experiencing early signs of balding and thinning it might be time to get your diet in shape so your body can fuel the hair with the right nutrients. Read up on The Do’s and Don’ts of Food For Hair Growth here.

In addition, drinking the right amount of water per day helps nearly every bodily function, and your hair is no different. How strong your hair is and how fast it grows can be linked to how efficiently your body eliminates toxins.

Drinking water literally flushes your system so support your body and aim to drink at least 2 litres of water a day - this is about 8 to 10 glasses - and you'll reap further benefits like more energy and brighter looking eyes too.

Limit your coffee intake and drink alcohol in moderation as both can dry out the hair and skin. Alcohol's dehydrating abilities can actually lead to hair loss if drunk regularly in excess too!

  • Sudden weight gain
  • Sudden weight loss
  • A recent high temperature (Over 38°C)
  • Recovering from a recent surgery that had complications
  • Excessive scaling or itchiness in the same area of the thinning
  • Swelling, burning, stinging, or discharge of pus in the same area of the thinning
  • Excessive hair growth or loss on other areas of the body too
  • Emotional distress at your hair loss symptoms

Final thoughts

Balding, thinning, and hair loss is a natural process most people will go through as they grow older, but this doesn’t make it any less distressing to experience. But, there are several ways you can support and maintain your hair and the growth cycle (via targeted product use, diet improvement, and styling) and keep it looking strong and healthy.
